On August 16, 2025, in Brgy. Langit, Alang-Alang, Leyte, Karel, a young leader and grantee of FundLife, officially opened the doors to her very own store. Stocked with essential goods such as rice and chicken feeds, Karel’s store is more than just a livelihood venture. It is a reflection of her hard work, determination, and dream to bring convenience to her community.
Beyond her new role as an entrepreneur, Karel is also the head of her household. With both her mother and father working in Luzon, she carries the responsibility of looking after her three younger siblings. From tending to their daily needs to making sure they get by each day, Karel has grown into a role that requires maturity, patience, and strength beyond her years. Her decision to open a store is not only about building a livelihood but also about ensuring stability for her family.
Expressing her gratitude, Karel shared, “I’m very thankful for FundLife for letting me have this opportunity. This business will not only help me and my family but will also provide convenience and solve a problem in our community. I will do my best to make this business a success.”
FundLife provides girls like Karel with a space to grow, helping them find their voice, shape their goals, and take the first steps toward leading change. As a participant, Karel has been in close communication with FundLife’s youth mentors and has joined several entrepreneurial workshops designed to enhance her knowledge and strengthen her confidence as an aspiring entrepreneur.
Her business idea was shaped not only by her personal goals but also by the needs of her community. For many residents of Brgy. Langit, basic supplies such as chicken feeds and rice are only available in the town proper, which requires additional expenses for transportation and time. By opening her store in the barangay, Karel hopes to ease this burden and provide her neighbors with accessible and affordable goods right where they live.
Ms. Riri FundLife's Account Officer, highlighted Karel’s strong potential, saying, “Karel’s business plan stood out among the others during their pitch presentation because it addresses a real problem in her community. Many families have to travel long distances to access basic goods like rice and chicken feeds, which takes both time and money. Karel’s plan not only provides a solution but also shows thoughtful consideration of her community’s needs and a clear vision for sustainability and growth.”
Karel’s initiative shows how opportunities, when matched with dedication and guidance, can empower young women to create meaningful impact in their communities. Her journey from program participant to business owner demonstrates the transformative power of investing in girls’ potential and equipping them with the tools to succeed.
As FundLife continues to champion adolescent girls, Karel’s success story shines as an inspiring reminder that when girls are given a chance to dream and the support to pursue it, they can plant seeds of change that uplift entire communities.
